Jonathan Hellmann
I am a Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics and a Clinical Bioethics Associate in the Department of Bioethics at The Hospital for Sick Children. I was on staff from 1983 to 2012 and the Clinical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for 17 years and on the teaching faculty of the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University for 11 years. I am currently completing a book on Bioethics in the NICU.
I was active in the Jewish youth movement of Habonim in South Africa for many years, a volunteer on Kibbutz after the 1967 war in Israel and continue to support the philosophy of Israel as a liberal Zionist democratic state. I spend 5-6 months each year in Israel where I do teaching at medical schools and clinical pediatric departments. I am profoundly concerned at the increasing rise of autocracy in Israel and participate in public demonstrations there. I am a member of the Adath Israel synagogue in Toronto.
